The Role of TEFL in Peru’s Linguistic Landscape

TEFL in Peru is an exciting opportunity that allows individuals to experience a different culture while making a difference in the lives of students. Peru, a country that is rich in history and diverse in culture, is a popular destination for TEFL teachers. In this blog post, we will dive into my experience of teaching English in Peru through a TEFL program, and share some tips for anyone interested in pursuing this endeavor.

Finding a TEFL Program:

Before going to Peru, I researched and found a TEFL program that fit my interests. It was important to me to find a program that was going to provide me with hands-on experience, as I had no prior teaching experience. I also wanted to ensure that the program was well-respected and offered opportunities to work in various locations in Peru. After researching, I decided on Maximo Nivel, an organization that provided training, accommodations, and job placement assistance.

TEFL Training:

Upon arriving in Peru, I was enrolled in a four-week TEFL training program. The program was intensive and consisted of daily classes, teaching practice, and lesson planning. I found the program to be enjoyable and challenging at times, but it provided me with the tools and skills necessary to teach English effectively. We were also given the opportunity to teach at local schools, which allowed us to gain hands-on experience and put our newly learned skills to the test. One of the biggest takeaways from my TEFL training was the importance of lessons that are engaging, fun, and culturally appropriate.

Job Placement Assistance:

One of the greatest advantages of enrolling in a TEFL program is the job placement assistance that is provided. Maximo Nivel offered assistance in finding teaching opportunities throughout Peru. I was placed in a small town called Cusco, located in the southern region of the country. I taught at a small language school for five months, and it was an unforgettable experience. The students were eager to learn and curious about my culture, which made for an enriching teaching experience. Teaching in Peru allowed me to make connections with both locals and fellow expats, and be a part of a close-knit community.

Embracing the Culture:

Peru is a country that is rich in history, cuisine, and tradition. While teaching in Peru, I was able to immerse myself in the culture and learn about the customs and traditions of the Peruvian people. I learned about their love for cuy (guinea pig), their vibrant and colorful festivals, and their appreciation for music and dance. I was also able to explore the natural beauty of the country and visit breathtaking sites such as Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain. Teaching in Peru allowed me to gain a unique perspective on the world and learn about a culture that I may have never experienced otherwise.

Lessons Learned:

Teaching English in Peru through a TEFL program was an unforgettable experience that taught me valuable skills and broadened my worldview. It was a challenging, yet rewarding experience that allowed me to make a difference in the lives of my students while experiencing a different culture. It provided me with the opportunity to make connections and friendships that will last a lifetime, and opened up doors for future travel and work opportunities.

Conclusion:

Teaching English in Peru through a TEFL program is a great way to gain hands-on teaching experience while immersing oneself in a different culture. It provides the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students while learning about a unique and diverse country. It is important to do thorough research when looking for a TEFL program, and to find one that fits your interests and goals. Overall, pursuing a TEFL experience in Peru is a valuable endeavor that will provide unforgettable memories and valuable skills for the future.
